Kalen Ray and Jack Tyra are going to represent Kilgore High in the UIL state tennis tournament next month.
In this week’s Region II tournament in Longview, Tyra and Ray made it through to state as the No. 2 team out of Region II – they made the finals, falling to Wills Point, 6-3, 7-2. The state tourney is at Texas A&M May 16-17.
This is the fourth time in the last six years that a Kilgore boys doubles team will compete in the state tourney. Takashi Thomas and Sanjit Lanka did it twice (in 2014 and 2015). Ian St. Clair and Tyrese Sheffield did so in 2017. All three of those teams earned a silver medal (second place). Tyra and Ray are both just juniors.
Also congratulations to Trystan Dobbs and Kelton Kelley, who finished fourth in regionals.
Kilgore tennis is coached by Jason Maroney and Rhonda Fletcher.
