Rangers drop first loss of the season to Hill; home today

Lady Rangers still unbeaten; RXIV opener here on Tuesday

Having an unbeaten basketball season isn’t unrealistic, but the odds are against it.

Kilgore College ran into those odds and didn’t come out unscathed Tuesday night at home, as Hill College dealt the Rangers a 77-59 loss, KC’s first of the season.

The Rangers (4-1) are off until Friday, when they host their annual KC Classic, a mini-tournament, of sorts. Tyler Junior College were to play Cedar Valley Friday afternoon here at Masters Gymnasium to start things, and then KC will face Lone Star College-Tomball at 6. This afternoon, TJC faces Tomball at 2 p.m., and the Rangers will face Cedar Valley at 4.

Next week, KC is off, then is back in action at home against East Texas Flight, a club team, next Saturday, Nov. 25, at 4 p.m.

KC just couldn’t get into a good offensive flow during the first half against Hill. The Rangers hit just 9 of 23 shots they took, and didn’t fare a lot better in the game as a whole, finishing 19-of-54. Coach Brian Hoberecht was likely disappointed in their showing at the free throw line, as well. The Rangers hit on just 13-of-23 freebies.

Daytone Jennings led KC with 13 points, and also had 10 rebounds. Davon Newton had 11 points; Darrian Grays had 12. Jennings also had three blocked shots, and he, Chad Bowie and Grays each had two assists. Bowie also had five rebounds.

For the Rebels, Shamaar Bailey had 16 points. Xavier Johnson had 13; Jamir Cheeks had 11; and so did Quinton Brigham.

It was a homecoming for former Kilgore High School standout Xavier Gaona, who scored nine points and went 3-of-3 from the floor, and hit both free throws. Gaona also had two rebounds and an assist.

Lady Rangers: KC’s women’s basketball team had been scheduled to play at Paul Quinn College today, but that game was canceled.

The Lady Rangers (5-0) officially have no more tune-ups before their Region XIV Conference opener. They’ll start their conference schedule on Tuesday at home against San Jacinto College, a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. Next Friday, they’ll be in Allen at Collin College in the Collin Classic. They’ll play Seminole State (Okla.) at noon Friday, and then Collin College on Saturday at noon.

The Lady Rangers actually already have a win over Seminole this year; they beat SS, 88-86, in overtime on a shot by Richelle Velez on Nov. 4.
