Both Kilgore College basketball teams stepped out of conference over Thanksgiving weekend, but with different results.
The KC Rangers, playing at home, had little problem with club-team East Texas Flight, winning handily, 101-62. But the Lady Rangers, playing in a mini-tournament of sorts at Collin College, lost a pair of games: to Seminole State Friday, 75-68, and to Collin College Saturday, 76-51.
It’s Region XIV Conference time tonight, though. The Lady Rangers, 1-0 in RXIV, play on the road at Blinn, in Brenham, a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. The Rangers will host Angelina College in the first conference game of the year for the men’s team.
KC 101, ETF 62 (men): The Rangers got 16 points each from Demiere Brown and James Conteh in this rout, and scored 54 points by halftime.
Chad Bowie added 15 and Devon Newton 10 for the Rangers (7-1), who hit just over 58 percent of their shots in the game. KC never trailed.
Darrian Grays scored nine for KC. Daytone Jennings had eight, and Malachi Davidson and Lansana Nwosu each had seven. Bowie had nine assists; Newton had seven assists and four steals; Brown had nine rebounds; Kur Ayol had eight.
Saturday, KC visits Jacksonville, a 4 p.m. start.
KC in Collin College Classic: The Lady Rangers went into the tourney with no losses this season, but came out with a couple.
In the loss to Seminole State, KC lost in spite of 21 points by Jade Thurmon and a 12-rebound, eight-point performance by Alicia Mardis. Richelle Velez had 15 points for the Lady Rangers (6-2). KC beat Seminole State on its own floor in the season opener, by one point.
In the loss to Collin, Thurmon again led, this time with 15. Courtney Parramore had seven, and Mardis and Velez, six each. Mardis had nine rebounds.
After visiting Blinn today, the Lady Rangers will host Coastal Bend at 2 p.m. Saturday.
