Police seek shooter following incident near KC Wednesday

Two people were taken to area hospitals with gunshot wounds Wednesday afternoon following a shooting outside an apartment building near Kilgore College.

Kilgore Police Officers and KCPD personnel locked down a portion of Houston Street and surrounding areas after an argument reportedly escalated into gunfire about 2:45 p.m.

According to an Oct. 18 press release from KPD Assistant Chief Roman Roberson, officers responded to the 900 block of South Street at reports of a disturbance and numerous gunshots.

“Upon arrival police encountered a group of 10-12 persons and two individuals who had suffered gunshot wounds,” he confirmed. “Witnesses on scene reported the person who had shot the two individuals had fled the scene in a white and brown Ford truck.”

Several individuals were initially handcuffed at the site and multiple witnesses were transported to KPD for interviews with detectives as the investigators processed the scene of the crime.

“Police recovered numerous shell casings from the scene,” Roberson noted.

Both victims were ultimately transported to Christus-Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview with non-life threatening injuries, he added.

On the scene, Kilgore Police Chief Todd Hunter confirmed one victim was shot in the abdomen and the second was wounded in the foot.

“Names of involved parties are not being release at this time,” Roberson reported Wednesday, and the investigation continues. “When further information is developed it will be released.”

There were no official updates as of press time Friday.

Investigators are steadily progressing through the case, Lt. Jonathan Gage said Friday: "I know that they worked early into this morning on leads."

Reportedly, at least one of the shooting victims has been released from the hospital.

According to Hunter, while units were en route to South Street, Kilgore College police officers were flagged down at the intersection of Hill and Broadway where one victim was laying in the roadway. Champion EMS medics and Kilgore firefighters could be seen on Broadway at Bagwell treating a black male as officers held a perimeter encompassing several blocks.

Numerous emergency vehicles were stationed throughout the area and officers kept their firearms handy at initial reports the shooter was still on the scene.

KPD has not confirmed a physical description of the shooter, and no arrest has been confirmed.

Kilgore College was temporarily placed on lockdown during the incident, lifting the warning by 3:40 p.m. Wednesday.

“The Kilgore Police is actively seeking information in regards to this crime,” Roberson concluded.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact KPD Case Det. Tim Dukes at 903.218.6904. Leads can also be submitted anonymously using tip411 by texting information to 847411+KILGORE+the tip.

“It is both confidential and anonymous,” Roberson added. “You can also contact Gregg County Crimestoppers at 903-236-STOP. Crimestoppers is also anonymous and you may be eligible for a monetary award.”
