Merchants welcome local cookie hunters downtown Saturday at Deck the Halls

After sending a score of competitors Dashing Through Downtown Dec. 1, Kilgore Main Street and its merchant partners are preparing for a sugar rush (and some sci-fi shopping) Saturday.

The second event in downtown’s Christmas Under the Stars activities this month runs 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 8. With retailers and restaurateurs waiting to welcome shoppers during Deck the Halls, the event’s key activity is a progressive cookie route.

At no cost to participate, “Customers will get the opportunity to get one cookie per stop,” according to organizers, “and add the cookies to their very own box.”

In addition to the treats, Saturday will include a 2:30 p.m. Story Time session with Santa Flavious and Joshua the Elf as well as a visit from costumed characters of Disney’s “Frozen,” Ana and Elsa.

“Look for a special Christmas activity book for the kids with a coupon page at the back.

An hour before Deck the Halls begins, some of the area’s geeky denizens will gather on South Kilgore Street between Main Street and South in front of the Crim Theater.

The ‘Geekmas Holiday Bizarre’ isn’t reprising the annual Geekend in early May, Ricky Custer said. Less of an entertainment event, it’s more merchant-oriented, giving visitors a wide selection of geek merch and pop culture paraphernalia for presents – it doesn’t matter whether the recipient prefers the Dark side of the Force or the Light.

“It’s mostly just a vendor event,” Custer said, with between 30 and 40 lined up. Geekmas runs 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. “Just some odd stuff and neat stuff and geek stuff. We’re trying to keep it simple.

“Mostly it’s just about vendors having cool stuff to sell and having fun. We’ll have some cos-players there. One of them will be collecting toys for needy kids.”

Hopefully, he added, the bizarre bazaar will complement other downtown restaurants and retailers, drawing another niche audience to downtown Kilgore for their Christmas shopping.

“We’ve still got some room for a few vendors,” he noted. “I think we can still fit some people.”
