An 82-year-old Canton man died Sunday when the pickup he was riding in reportedly crashed into the back of another truck on Interstate 20.

Kilgore Police Officers monitor that stretch of the interstate within the city limits. They were dispatched about 12:30 p.m. July 8 toward a “major crash” in the westbound lane east of Hwy. 42.

“Initial investigation revealed traffic was stopped on the roadway due to another crash,” KPD Assistant Chief Roman Roberson reported, “when a 1997 Chevrolet pickup crashed into the rear of a stopped vehicle.”

According to KPD’s account, 71 year-old Canton resident Janie Jones was driving the 1997 pickup when it rear-ended the 1996 Chevrolet truck driven by Chad Kidd, 35, of Chandler. A third vehicle sustained minor damage in the collision.

The victim in the crash, Joseph Robert Jones, was a passenger in Janie Jones’ pickup – officers reported the 82-year-old deceased on the scene, the time of death pronounced at 1:30 p.m. by Gregg County Prec. 2 Justice of the Peace Tim Bryan.

Janie Jones and another passenger in the 1997 pickup sustained minor injuries and were each transported by ambulance to Longview Regional Hospital.

“The crash is still under investigation,” Roberson noted: anyone with information on the incident (case no. 1807-0466) should contact KPD Traffic Ofc. Jason Romine on KPD’s non-emergency line, 903-983-1559.
