A couple of weeks ago, in the middle of the regular season, things didn’t necessarily look great for either Kilgore High School soccer team.
The girls were banged up, and lost at Spring Hill. The boys were upset by Tatum. But things are looking good now – very good.
With one game left in the regular season, both KHS soccer teams appear to have clinched their respective District 16-4A championships. Both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs routed Henderson on Friday, and each has a game left: Carthage, this Friday. The Bulldogs will be at home, hosting Carthage at 5:15 p.m. (junior varsity, varsity to follow) and the girls will play at Carthage, varsity-only, starting at 5 p.m.
Then, it’s playoff time. And opponents, dates, and sites will be announced when they’re available.
Kilgore 4, Henderson 0 (girls): Katy Raby scored twice for coach Heidi Hagan-McPeak’s Lady ‘Dogs, and Leslie Bennett and Tori Shipman each scored once.
Kilgore 4, Henderson 1 (boys): Elian Torres scored twice, and Mateo Meraz and Yoni Contreras each scored once for the Bulldogs. David Garcia had two assists, and Jose “Paco” Gonzalez and Daniel Sifford each had one.
Both Kilgore teams swept the season series against Henderson. Both are looking to repeat as district champions (Kilgore’s boys have won their district title almost every year in the last seven years), and both are hoping to make it back to the UIL state tournament in Georgetown – they both reached Georgetown a year ago.
