Kilgore High School’s marching band recently took top honors in a new category at the fifth annual East Texas Music Awards while The Back Porch restaurant picked up Venue of the Year (again) alongside accolades for some its regular headliners.
It’s the first year the Marching Band of the Year achievement has been awarded, and Kilgore’s students and instructors earned the spotlight during the Sept. 16 ceremony at K.E. Bushman’s Winery & Celebration Center.
According to etxmusic.com, “The East Texas Music Awards is a platform for fans to promote their favorite bands, musicians, venues, radio stations, and more.” Established in 2010, “We have some of the finest music in the world, and over 400M+ fan votes have been tallied.”
It’s the second year in a row The Back Porch has been voted top venue in the area. Also for the second consecutive year, the Ally Venable Band – regular performers on the Broadway Boulevard stage – was voted Blues Band of the Year. The band’s young namesake, a Kilgore High School student, previously earned Female Guitarist of the Year in 2014 and 2015.
Teazur, another common sight under The Back Porch’s lights, was chosen by voters as Rock Band of the Year for the second year in a row.
