Kilgore beats Arp; tourney this week

Kilgore High School’s volleyball team swept Arp, 25-18, 25-23, 25-23, on Friday afternoon, here at KHS gym.

The Lady Bulldogs (5-8 overall, including all tournament games) got nine kills from Jada Abercrombie, five from Miah Thomas, and 11 assists and nine digs from Nicki Rawls. 

Kilgore is participating in the Brownsboro tournament on Thursday and Saturday, as is Sabine. In fact, KHS and Sabine are both in pool A, along with Brownsboro and Frankston. KHS and Sabine play at 8 a.m. Thursday. Sabine swept Kilgore last week, here at KHS.

Also in the tournament, dubbed Volleyfest, are Overton, West Rusk, Bullard, Edgewood, Quinlan Boles, North Lamar, Palestine Westwood, Rains, Huntington, Mabank, Mineola, Rice, Jacksonville, Athens, Alba-Golden and Elkhart.

After that, the Lady ‘Dogs will host Pine Tree next Tuesday, a 4:30 p.m. freshmen start, and visit Brook Hill next Friday, varsity-only, at 4:30.


Lady ‘Dogs win, boys strong in Union Grove

Zoey Craven picked up right where she left off for Kilgore’s girls cross-country team, with the best time for any 4A girl’s runner in last Saturday’s Union Grove Invitational. Craven, who had the 11th best time in the state cross-country meet last year, finished the course in 13 minutes, 27 seconds. 

Cristina Rosas of KHS finished fourth (13:42), and Emma Taylor was sixth (13:56). Also for KHS, Maria Whitaker clocked in at 14:16. Vanessa Valesco finished in 15:17; Meliza Vega in 15:54; Estrella Galvan in 15:57; 

KHS girls cross-country is coached by Heidi Hagan.

Kilgore’s boys’ pursuit of a district title for a sixth straight year began last weekend, as well. The Bulldogs, coached by Phillip Lane, were third in the meet, behind Palestine and Carthage.

KHS was hit hard by graduation, but still, AB Herrera finished sixth overall (19:05). Also for KHS, Austin Bain finished in 19:55. Victor Rangel came in at 21:19. Noah Odom finished in 22:16; Maicol Pena in 22:40; Carlos Muniz in 23:26; and Ricardo Cedillo in 24:02.

Kilgore cross-country won’t run this week, but will compete at the University of Texas at Tyler meet on Saturday, Sept. 8.


KHS home Thursday

The Kilgore High School Bulldogs, off to a 2-1 start with wins over Jacksonville and John Tyler, are back in action Thursday at home, after school against Lindale.

Coach Jason Maroney’s Bulldogs then go to Van next Thursday, also after school. Kilgore’s only loss of the season was the very first matchup, against Whitehouse.
