AP names Carthage first in 4A poll
Kilgore’s arch rival and District 10-4A opponent Carthage – back-to-back winner of the last two UIL 4A Division I state titles – has been voted as the number one team in the Associated Press Texas Class 4A preseason poll.
The poll doesn’t take divisions of the classes – 4A Division I, or Division II – into question, and just ranks 4A teams in the state. Carthage, loaded again including returning quarterback Gunner Capps, was atop the poll, followed by Argyle. West Orange-Stark came in third, followed by Waco La Vega and Stephenville.
Cuero (six), Gilmer (seven), Pleasant Grove, Kennedale and Liberty Hill round out the top 10, in that order.
Kilgore was among the handful of teams that got votes but fell short of being ranked in the top 10; so was Henderson.
Regarding another team in the Kilgore News Herald’s coverage area, West Rusk, the Raiders didn’t make the AP’s Class 3A top 10, but they were among the leading vote-getters that fell just short. Newton tops that poll, and Atlanta is ranked seventh.
West Rusk, Waskom and Harmony were three schools that didn’t quite crack the top 10.
