Kilgore, KC in Two-Step
Like baseball, high school softball hasn’t had a lot of playing time so far this season, either.
Kilgore was off most of last week after a tournament in White Oak was canceled. KHS coach Cheyenne Kirkpatrick moved the Lady ‘Dogs’ home opener, originally scheduled for Tuesday, to Monday to try and avoid rain.
Kilgore did get to play, although they lost to Garrison, 18-7.
Bailey Downing had two hits and scored twice; Bailey Hedges had a double and an RBI; Hailee Jo Lewis had a hit and 2 RBI, and Kristen Wilson had one, with a single. Elizabeth Idlett, Destiney Mendez and Mackenzie Harrison also each had a hit. Alyssa Whittington and Miah Thomas each scored a run and each walked twice. Mendez also scored.
This week, Kilgore is scheduled to take part in the big Texas Two-Step tournament in Longview, at Lear Park. In fact, so is KC – the Rangers, of course, will be in a college bracket.
The schedule had already changed a few times as of press time for this edition of the News Herald on Tuesday. But at press time, on Thursday’s first day, Kilgore was slated to play Maud on field four at 10 a.m. The Lady ‘Dogs will follow against Queen City at noon. On Friday, Kilgore plays Joaquin at 2:15 p.m. on field three, and Atlanta at 4:15 on field two.
On Saturday, Kilgore plays Edgewood at 11 a.m. on field two, then Prairiland at 1 p.m. on field three.
Kilgore’s junior varsity also has games in the tournament. They’ll play at 2:15 p.m. Thursday against Palestine on field one, and at 4:15 against another Palestine JV team on field two. On Friday, Kilgore’s JV faces Longview at 10 a.m. on field one.
For KC in the tournament, they’ll play Coastal Bend at 4 p.m. Friday on field six, and Blinn on field six, at 6 p.m.
On Saturday, the Rangers play Laredo at 1 p.m. on field six, and San Jacinto at 5 p.m., on the same field.
On Sunday, KC plays Lamar State at 11 a.m., and Alvin at 3 p.m., both on field six.
KC is 4-6 this season.
