JUNIOR COLLEGE BASKETBALL
KC men win; ladies put up fight in loss
Kilgore College’s Rangers really needed a win on the road Wednesday night at Bossier Parish, and got one; the Lady Rangers didn’t win, but didn’t play poorly, in a road loss to Trinity Valley in Athens.
The Rangers are home today at 4 p.m. against Paris Junior College. The Lady Rangers finish up a four-game road trip today at San Jacinto, also a 4 p.m. tipoff. Wednesday, KC’s ladies will be home at 5:30 p.m. against Blinn, and the Rangers will play on the road, a 7 p.m. start against Panola College in Carthage.
KC 69, Bossier 63 (men): January hasn’t been kind to the Rangers, who are just 3-3, all in conference play, this month.
But the Rangers got a little scrappy in this one, and drilled 42 second-half points to get out of Louisiana with a win. They’re 12-6 overall, and 4-5 in conference/North Zone play. Today’s opponent, Paris, is 8-2 in conference and should be a real test.
For the Rangers at Bossier, Daytone Jennings had 16 points and six rebounds. Malachi Davidson had 15 points, and also had seven assists. Chad Bowie had 11 points, four assists and three rebounds. Darrian Grays scored 12, and Davon Newton had eight. James Conteh had five points and Demiere Brown had two. Samory Gueye didn’t score but had three blocked shots and four rebounds.
KC went 19-of-22 at the free throw line and hit almost half (21-of-43) of its shots in the game.
Trinity Valley 65, KC 54 (women): It was a rematch of last year’s Region XIV Conference championship game, and it would’ve been impressive if KC could’ve knocked off Trinity Valley on its home court.
But that’s rarely done, and it wasn’t meant to be on Wednesday, either.
If not for a huge first quarter – TVCC outscored the Lady Rangers, 27-10 – KC might have pulled it off.
Danielle Meador and Jade Thurmon each finished with 16 points for KC. Richelle Velez had nine points. Alex Strawhorn had seven, and Tyra Cormier, Alicia Mardis and Patience Idoko each had two. No KC player had more than five rebounds (Mardis had five). KC hit 20-of-58 shots from the floor.
KC is 6-4, in third place in conference with a 6-4 record.
