Kilgore’s Smith in national title game

Kilgore High School alum Ja’Quorius Smith now suits up for Texas A&M-Commerce, who will play in the NCAA Division II national championship game on Saturday. The Lions (12-1) will take on West Florida (11-3) on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Kansas City, Kan., for the Division II national title. A&M-Commerce seeks to become the first Lone Star Conference team since 1982 to win a national championship in football.

The game will air live on ESPN2.

Smith, a redshirt freshman, wears number 43. He is a running back. He has only played sparingly this season, but did have a 27-yard punt return against UT-Permian Basin.

Wilson MVP, WR lead all-district team

West Rusk defensive lineman Tyree Wilson has been named the overall most valuable player the District 9-3A, Division II all-district team.

Wilson, a solid verbal commitment to Texas A&M University, was one of several WR standouts honored as part of the team, voted on by the district’s coaches. Teammate L.J. Harper, WR’s quarterback, was named co-offensive MVP with Waskom’s T.K. Hamilton. And West Rusk’s coaching staff was also honored.

In addition, running back Jaylon Garland, a junior, was named first-team, as were wide receiver Dylan Walker, a senior; offensive lineman Brett Howell, a senior; senior defensive linemen Matthew Davidson and Darrien Johnson; Walker again, at linebacker; Diego Molina, a junior, at inside linebacker; and defensive back D.J. Hart.

Named all-district second-team were Hart (a junior, at wide receiver); junior Andreas Martinez on the offensive line; junior Darius Richardson, on the defensive line; senior outside linebacker Levi Hughes; and defensive back Talon Winings, just a sophomore.

Also, Hughes was honored as first-team kicker; and Orlando Cortez and Parker Mizell were honored as all-district utility players.

Honorable mention all-district for West Rusk were running backs Gage Whitlock and LaDarron Jones; wide receiver Koure Johnson; and offensive linemen Victor Martinez and Dustin Gibson.
