HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS
KHS doubles team at state this week
A shot at Kilgore High School’s third state championship of this school year will be on the line this week for a couple of Bulldogs’ athletes.
Tyrese Sheffield and Ian St. Clair, who are district and regional champions already in boys doubles play, will try to add another trophy to the case this weekend, as they compete in the UIL state tennis tournament, at the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station.
They jump right into the tournament – they’ll play tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. in the quarterfinals against the Bellville team of Hunter Morris and Mason Stox. A loss ends the season. A win, and they’ll head to the semifinals, also tomorrow, against either a team from Taylor or a team from Snyder, at 3:30. The finals are Friday morning at 10.
Car wash, activities for Jay Cox Saturday
The Kilgore community has embraced efforts to help Kilgore High School sophomore Jay Cox, who was injured in an automobile accident a couple of weeks ago, and has been at Children’s Hospital in Dallas since, heavily medicated, but hopefully improving.
There will be a host of activities, including a car wash, at Gabriel/Jordan this Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. In addition to the car wash, there will be a raffle for a 55-quart Taiga cooler with backwoods camo design – tickets are already on sale for $5, and will be on sale Saturday until just before the give-away at 1:50 p.m. Kilgore Police Department officers will be on hand cooking hamburgers and hot dog plates, with chips and a drink for $5.
Another event is currently in the planning stages. In fact, there is a meeting about that event on Thursday (tomorrow night) at Kilgore’s Bodacious Barbecue restaurant, at the intersection of Interstate 20 and Highway 42, at 6 p.m. in the meeting room. The event is expected to be Saturday, June 24.
Closing ceremonies next Thursday
The closing ceremonies for the regular season of the Kilgore Boys Baseball Association will be next Thursday, May 25, at 6 p.m.
The ceremonies will be conducted on the Harris Street park’s 13-14 year-old field; games there that night have been rescheduled.
All-star tournaments are just around the corner. Watch the News Herald, and kilgorenewsherald.com, for the announcement of the all-star selections, and for locations and times for those tournaments this summer.
