Life’s journeys

WE each have our own journey in life to make and although we try our best to alter it as long as we have faith, there is one mightier that keeps bringing us back to the right path.

SHE likes to sell purses and shoes as a way of meeting people and getting out of the house these days as if she doesn’t already have enough to do as a wife, grandmother and pastor of Greater Faith Ministries Church.

“It’s not easy being a pastor or a woman pastor in today’s world,” said Casandra Fryar. “But, I have been blessed by God and I have the support of the Bishops, my husband whom I could not do without and others throughout the community, although my spiritual strength is far stronger than my physical strength at the moment.”

It was in 1983 that Casandra gave her life Christ. A single woman raising three children, Casandra left the life of living with a husband who was a drug dealer and placed herself into nursing school, achieving LVN status with multiple achievement awards for work. She worked in the cardiology department before moving to Texas and was hired on at Kilgore’s Laird Hospital where she worked in the Intermediate Care unit and Select Specialty units.

“The year 2009 was my breaking point,” admits Casandra. “During the month of October my house caught on fire, my husband died and my son was traumatically injured. I lived in a motel for one month with a four- month old grandson while trying to find a place to live. It caused a mental shutdown helped by post traumatic stress syndrome from my earlier days,” she said. “Having gone through that as a Pastor along with the nursing training, I am now able to work with individuals with stress issues.”

The strength of her faith helped her get back on her feet when she met and married her second husband, Efrem Fryar, who serves as a Deacon in the church. Later, a car accident caused severe injuries to her neck and back resulting in surgery which prevents as much physical work as she would like to do regarding the church.

“The church was originally located at Laird Hill, but in 2017 we had it built closer in to town with a grand opening on February 12, 2017. It currently seats 96 but there were 175 at the opening.

“I just want to do what God wants me to do,” said Casandra, pastor of 14 years. “Like all pastors I sacrifice for the ministry. I, too, get tired and at times want to back away from it. But, then God does something like the text I received in December from a young man who had gone wayward in life and seeking help. This last week, he contacted me to let me know he had joined a church in Longview. I like to see people saved from the snares of Satan. That keeps me opening the doors of my church,” she said. “One of my favorite Bible verses is Hebrews 11:1- Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. And my theme for the year is “Still Standing Strong.”
