An area volleyball playoff contender has already started its 2017 volleyball season, and the Kilgore High School Lady Bulldogs will officially begin theirs on Tuesday night.
Leverett’s Chapel , just a year removed from an appearance in the state tournament, has tipped off its season already. Coach Rickey Hammontree and the Lady Lions beat Longview Christian School in three games – 25-19, 25-19, 25-12 – earlier this week, then lost to Trinity School of Texas on Tuesday.
The Lady Lions were to host their own tournament this weekend.

Kilgore has been playing play days for a little more than a week, and third-year head coach Lacy Coldiron said things have gone well so far.
The Lady ‘Dogs made it to the gold bracket in a tournament in Gary. They lost to North Zulch in the first game, but bounced back with a 25-14, 25-16 win over Overton, and then beat the Carthage junior varsity, 25-22, 25-23.
Kilgore will officially open the 2017 campaign at home on Tuesday night against John Tyler, a Class 5A school. Freshmen will play at 5, followed by JV (6) and varsity (7).
Next weekend, Kilgore competes in the annual ETBU tournament at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall. The Lady ‘Dogs will have about a month to tune up before District 15-4A play begins – the other teams in the district are Bullard, Gilmer, Gladewater, Spring Hill and Chapel Hill, as it was a year ago. The district schedule for Kilgore starts here against Gladewater on Sept. 19.
KHS missed the playoffs last season after making them in Coldiron’s first year back in 2015. That season, they lost to unbeaten North Lamar in the first round.
