The road for both Kilgore College basketball teams to reach the Region XIV Conference championship goes through Trinity Valley.
Kilgore College's Lady Rangers took down Blinn, 71-63, on Friday night, and now they'll face Trinity Valley's ladies in round two of the RXIV tournament. That'll be Friday at 3 p.m.
The conference tournament is being played in its entirety at John Alexander Gymnasium, the former campus of Lon Morris College in Jacksonville.
In the tournament today, the Kilgore College men will face Trinity Valley, as well, a 1 p.m. start. The Rangers lost to TVCC on Saturday -- the Lady Rangers did, as well, in fact -- and Trinity Valley has dominated the women's side of the conference for years.
The TVCC men have won 10 straight games, and had a bye into today's second-round game with the Rangers.
Both KC games, and any others this week if both teams advance, can be heard on KDOKradio.com, and on tsrnsports.com, with Manny Almanza on the call.
* KC 71, Blinn 63 (women): The first-round game for coach Anna Nimz's Lady Rangers wasn't a runaway, but the Lady Rangers did play well: they shot 14-of-18 from the free throw line, hit about 40 percent of their shots in the game, and never trailed.
Jade Thurmon led KC with 24 points. She also had eight rebounds, two assists, a blocked shot and two steals. Richelle Velez had 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal.
Also, Patience Idoko had nine points; Alexus Moore had eight; Danielle Meador had six; and Tyra Cormier and Alicia Mardis each had four. Cormier also had five rebounds and two blocked shots; Mardis had four rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Jade Rochelle led Blinn with 15 points, and Missy Archie had 14.
The Lady Rangers are 20-10 this season, headed into Friday's game with TVCC. It's actually a rematch from last year's women's conference championship game.
Coach Brian Hoberecht's Rangers are 17-12 on the season and will be facing the tournament's number one seed today, for the right to play in the conference semifinals. TVCC's Cardinals are 27-3 overall, nationally ranked in the top 10, and are 18-1 this season against conference opponents.
