Kilgore College's Lady Rangers have gotten the 2017-18 basketball season off to a fantastic start.
The Lady Rangers are 6-0, and the latest of the six is a 69-67 home win over San Jacinto, in the Region XIV Conference opener for both teams, played here at Masters Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
The Lady Rangers are in Allen this weekend, in the Collin College Classic; they're set to play Collin College today at noon. They'll be back in action Wednesday night, back in conference play at Blinn College in Brenham, a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
The Rangers, meanwhile, are 6-1, their lone loss at home to Hill College a little more than a week ago. Coach Brian Hoberecht's team plays at home today (at 4, against East Texas Flight), and plays the RXIV opener Wednesday night at home against Angelina College, set for a 7 p.m. start.
* KC 69, San Jac 67 (women): Coach Anna Nimz's Lady Rangers outscored San Jac, 19-6, in the second half and built a lead, only to see San Jac chip away at it -- ultimately, KC held on, though, for the win.
KC's players were fouled with San Jac trying to stop the clock, and Alicia Mardis knocked down a pair of free throws with six seconds left that gave KC a four-point lead.
Mardis was fouled again, and she missed one, but teammate Tyra Cormier managed to grab the rebound, and the game clock expired.
Jade Thurmon led the Lady Rangers with 28 points, and Richelle Velez had 12.
