Two area high school volleyball teams took big district wins on Tuesday, and another unfortunately dug themselves a little deeper.
Kilgore High School hosted Gladewater in the first District 15-4A matchup of the year for both teams, and KHS came out on top. Overton is well into District 20-2A play, but crossed an important threshold, going to 3-1 in district with a win over San Augustine.
Leverett’s Chapel, though, slipped at home to Timpson – the Lady Lions lost in four. LC is now 0-3 in 20-2A, and now have to climb out of that hole, if they’re going to have any hope of extending their season to the playoffs and returning to the state tournament, where they competed just last year.
Kilgore/Gladewater: Coach Lacy Coldiron’s Lady Bulldogs have had sort of an up-and-down non-district schedule, but the district standings – as in, being in the top four – are how the UIL determines who goes to the playoffs, of course, and Kilgore is one step closer.
Kilgore swept the Lady Bears, 25-19, 25-23, and then a grueling 27-25 set. The Lady ‘Dogs are 9-13-1 on the season, but the all-important 1-0 in district play.
KHS got nine kills from sophomore Jada Abercrombie, and four from senior Tiana Holland. Dayton McElyea and Rylie Mann each had three; Lauren Bryant had two; and Haley Page, Lindsey Cassity, and Jamaria Thomas each had one.
Abercrombie also had nine digs; Nicki Rawls had eight; Page and Skyler Day each had seven; McElyea had six; Mackenzie Cavanaugh had four; Thomas and Symonne Brooks and Mann each had three; and Cassity, Holland, and Bryant each had one. Also, McElyea had 15 assists, and Rawls had seven.
Kilgore will visit Spring Hill on Tuesday, starting with freshmen at 5 p.m., with junior varsity and varsity to follow. The Lady ‘Dogs will host Chapel Hill next Friday, starting with varsity at 4:30.
Overton/San Augustine: Overton and Leverett’s Chapel are in the same volleyball district, but appear to be going in different directions. The Lady Mustangs pulled out a 3-1 win over San Augustine Tuesday.
Maci Carpenter had two kills and six assists for OHS. Haley McMillian had two kills and five digs. Jaylin Tomlin had five digs and an ace, and Sarrah Garrett had a kill and two digs.
Overton will visit LC on Tuesday, starting at 4:30.
LC/Timpson: The Lady Lions might be down, but don’t count out a team that made it one step away from the state tournament two years ago, then made it to the state round last year.
Against Timpson, though, LC came up short, 21-25, 15-25, 25-21, 18-25.
Yesenia Avalos had 18 kills and 25 digs. Sara Williamson had 12 kills and a dig. Michelle Jamaica had three kills, 20 digs and an ace. Aubrey Williamson and Lexus Haley each had three kills; Williamson had three kills, 25 digs and two aces, and Haley had four digs, two assists and four aces.
Also for LC, Gracie Bathke had a kill, 21 digs, 30 assists and an ace; and Skyla Craig had 30 digs and a kill.
LC’s JV won, though, 25-14, 25-22.
