“It will be helpful in our mutual objective to allow every man in America to look his neighbor in the face and see a man – not a color.”

– Adlai Stevenson

IF YOUR Kilgore News Herald is delivered by mail, it’s a day late. As you know by now, there was no mail delivery Wednesday… federal services and offices were closed to observe a day of mourning for former president George H.W. Bush.

WE HAVE no doubt you’ll recognize the Christmas carols when The Pine Nutz play downtown Saturday, Dec. 15. If perchance you don’t, though, it’ll be but one more thing you can blame on the city manager.

CITY Manager Josh Selleck plays baritone in the five-member ensemble (they are The Bier Nutz during Oktoberfest) and, notably, has arranged the music for the brass – and one woodwind – “orchestra.” Apparently most Christmas carols are not arranged for a brass (and one woodwind) band.

MEMBER-musicians are Selleck (baritone), Clark Langley (trumpet), Lee Waters (clarinet), James Draper (baritone) and Tony Haufler (trumpet).

THE REMARKABLY popular drive-through nativity at Forest Hills Baptist Church is back. The 13-scene live enactment of the Christmas story is set along a drive around the church property. See it nightly from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

WE DO food well in Kilgore. We have the East Texas Oilmen’s Chili Cook-off, of course. And the Lions Club serves chili once a year. St. Luke’s United Methodist does a pie and soup luncheon. Cross Roads United Methodist does pork chops and Pirtle United Methodist does gumbo.

ST. PAUL’s Episcopal Church (how did a non-Methodist church sneak onto this list?) hosts its annual taco salad luncheon this week – from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7 – in the parish hall at 314 N. Henderson Blvd. For $8, parishioners will sell you taco salad, dessert and a beverage. And for those who need still more food, the event includes a bake sale.
