KILGOROUND

For unto us a Child is born,

Unto us a Son is given;

And the government will be upon His shoulder.

And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,

Prince of Peace.

– Isaiah 9:6

THE benevolence of ordinary Joes and Joans is incalculable but never more apparent than during the holiday season. Beginning with gifts of food and food baskets at Thanksgiving to toy-collection drives at Christmas, our neighbors (universally speaking) give and give and give.

THAT spirit isn’t peculiar to Americans or Christians – it’s a spirit present in all religions and across the globe. It’s the spirit which, every year, reminds us what humanity is about.

MERRY Christmas. Happy Holy Days from ALL of us to ALL of you.

THE Thomas Fire in California has burned more than 272,000 acres equals 425 square miles. That’s more than 20 miles by 20 miles.

THINK of it this way: From Kilgore, drive Hwy. 259 south, through Henderson and almost to the sale barn. That’s 20 miles. Now imagine turning left and driving another 20 miles, then left for another 20 then left and back to your starting point. You’ve now driven 80 miles, the perimeter of an area 420 square miles. The Thomas fire is bigger than that.

Miniature Oreos. What’s the point?

TEXAS’ population grew by about 400,000 people in the 12 months ending July – We added more people than live in the city of Arlington. Of the nation’s cities with more than 50,000 population, the three fastest-growing were Conroe, Frisco and McKinney.

CENSUS folks say Texas’ population is now about 28.3 million, up from 25.1 when they counted heads in 2010. Of the newcomers, more than 209,000 represent natural growth – Texans having babies. The balance is net migration, the net of people moving in versus people moving out.
