The second round of the University Interscholastic League's basketball playoffs will include a couple of teams from the Kilgore area.
Both the Kilgore High School Bulldogs and the Sabine High Cardinals advanced into round two, the area round, with wins Tuesday night. Kilgore beat North Lamar, 37-33, in a Class 4A bi-district round game at Emory Rains, and Sabine blew by Ore City, 79-42, in the 3A playoffs.
Their second-round games will both be Friday. Sabine (24-9), the District 16-3A champion, will take on Mount Vernon (13-8) at Emory Rains Friday at 7:30, the second game if a doubleheader.
Kilgore (18-10) will face Crandall (25-10) in Athens on Friday night at 7:30.
Coach Jeff Coleman's Bulldogs edged out North Lamar in a very low-scoring game at Rains on Tuesday.
The 'Dogs got 10 points from Deiontrae Wheat, and nine from Jeremiah Hoskins.
Coleman is in the first season of his second tenure as coach of the Bulldogs. The last full season he coached at Kilgore -- the 2013-14 season, with Nick Orange, Trey Conrod and Xavier Gaona -- the Bulldogs made the UIL 4A regional tournament at Texas A&M-Commerce.
Sabine, of course, regularly plays well into the 3A playoffs, and did so last year, falling in the third round.
