Judy Matthews

Services for Judy Matthews, 90, of Austin, formerly of Kilgore, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, January 4, at Rader Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Bill Holda officiating. Burial will follow in Rusk County Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Matthews passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017 in Austin. She was born on June 7, 1926 in Prairie Hill, Texas, to William and Vesta Goeke. Mrs. Matthews was one of five girls and grew up in a small rural farm community in Central Texas. She went to Coolidge High School, and in 1943 married her high school sweetheart, Leslie Lawrence Matthews.

Mrs. Matthews was a longtime resident of Kilgore for more than 45 years. She worked in the library at Kilgore Junior College and after retirement, loved to travel with her husband and sisters. Known as “Mama Judy” to her grandchildren, her adventurous and curious nature created rays of sunshine for them, kind of like her favorite colors, orange and yellow.

She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who enjoyed cooking for her family and loved food altogether. Visits to her in later years usually ended in a grandchild leaving her with a chocolate bar as a snack. She kept her mind quick witted and sharp until the end by doing crossword puzzles daily. Her family is eternally grateful for the many years we were able to share with her.

Mrs. Matthews is survived by her sister, Billie Holland; daughters, Leslie Williamson, Lori Matthews and her son-in-law Joe Williamson; her grandchildren, Angie Dyer, Matthew Williamson, Trina Walters, Deanna Girard, Lori Ann Leavitt, Alex Matthews, Jordan Matthews and Sivon Matthews; 18 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Leslie Matthews, her parents and sisters Jonell Ford, Juanita Spruiell and Faye Harder.

Memorial may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1216 Kilgore, Texas 75663 or a charity of your choice.
