Graveside services for Mary Jane Simmons Puckett, 78, of Kilgore will be held at 12 Noon on Tuesday, November 28, at the Kilgore Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore Monday from 5-7 p.m.

Mary Jane passed away on November 22, 2017 of respiratory complications after a long illness with Autoimmune Lung Disease. She had a wonderful life, spending most of it in Kilgore, where she was born on January 5, 1939. She was the daughter of Dr. D.C. Simmons and Eunice Simmons. She attended Kilgore Heights and was a proud member of the Kilgore High School Class of 1956, where she was valedictorian.

She obtained her BA in History from the University of Texas at Austin and her Master’s Degree in Education from Stephen F. Austin State University. She was an avid fan and supporter – win or lose – of the Kilgore Bulldogs and Texas Longhorns and later the Gladewater Bears.

Her career was spent in education. She taught in the KISD for 16 years and was KHS Assistant Principal for two years. She spent six years teaching and in school administration in Georgia. Returning to Texas, she was Assistant Principal and Principal at Gladewater High School until her retirement. She enjoyed her students immensely, loved a challenge, and was fair to all.

After retirement she enjoyed golf, cards, travel, and time at her beloved Miramar Beach in the Florida Panhandle where she spent happy times since infancy.

Her accomplishments and organizational memberships are too long to list. Mary Jane was active.

She is survived by her children, Melissa, Jay and Tracy, and three grandchildren, a son -in-law and daughter-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Jessie Carol Simmons Elder.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association.
