Kilgore girls out; Sabine advances

KHS boys learn first-round opponent: vs. Center in Nac on Tuesday

They might have been a year ahead of schedule, but Kilgore High School's Lady Bulldogs made the UIL Class 4A playoffs this season in coach Jeff Coleman's first year back at the school.

But the Lady 'Dogs' playoff stay was unfortunately a short one. Kilgore lost its first-round, or bi-district, playoff game to Henderson Tuesday night, 46-25, at Pine Tree High School in Longview.

Jamaria Thomas led Kilgore with nine points in the low-scoring affair. Henderson was paced by Alexis Calderon's 19 points.

Henderson moves on to round two this weekend to face Canton in Tyler, at TJC on Friday night.

Coleman, who was coach for the Kilgore boys program a few years back, helped guide the Bulldogs out of a near-three-decade-long playoff absence. After brief stints at Tyler Lee and Gladewater, he returned to KHS this year to coach the Lady 'Dogs, his first year as a girls basketball coach.

UPDATE: In another story posted earlier on, we confirmed that Kilgore's boys basketball team, coached by Jerry Timmons, had made the playoffs and was awaiting their first-round opponent to be set.

The Bulldogs beat Gladewater, 47-36, in Gladewater on Tuesday night.

Kilgore will play Center in a first-round game in Nacogdoches next Tuesday night at 6 p.m. That game was originally scheduled to be played at Cushing, but it has changed, and will be played at Nac.

Sabine: Coach Sara Cantrell's Lady Cardinals also played a first-round Class 3A playoff game Tuesday night in Longview, facing Jefferson at Longview High School.

Sabine advanced to round two, cruising by Jefferson, 75-41.

The Lady Cardinals got 23 points and nine rebounds from Kristen Stuart, and 21 points, 20 rebounds and two blocked shots from teammate Miranda Cook.

Gracie Taylor scored eight and Sarah Davis seven for Sabine, who will be back in action in a second-round game on Friday -- they'll face Queen City in Marshall on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

Sabine's boys have closed out the regular season, as well. As mentioned in an earlier story, Sabine will play Beckville next Tuesday night at Pine Tree High School in a time still to be determined.
