Needless to say, the efforts of Kilgore cross-country coaches to coax intensity out of their runners is apparently working.
Kilgore High School’s boys cross-country team won the Hallsville Cross-Country Invitational on Friday morning at Lear Park – Kilgore’s girls were phenomenal, too, paced by top overall-finisher Zoe Craven, just a freshman at KHS. Zoe finished the course in 11 minutes, 55.43 seconds. Christina Rosas was second for Kilgore, but third overall.
Senior Josh Fletcher led the Bulldogs, finishing 11th overall (the boys course is longer, a 5K), with a time of 18 minutes, 9.29.
Austin Bain ran Kilgore’s second-best time, finishing 13th overall in 18:14.58. Gregorio Alvarez was third for Kilgore, 18th overall, with a time of 18:31.39.
Victor Rangel was 20th (18:37.68) and Jose Canchola was 26th (19 minutes). Ab Herrera was 31st (19:09.65) and Mitchell Molandes was 40th (19:32.51).
Craven’s time for the girls was very impressive, considering top finishers for Kilgore cross-country girls teams of the recent past were finishing in 13 minutes. Kilgore had three girls finish in under that time (Craven, Rosas and Emma Taylor).
Rosas finished with a time of 12:18.84. Taylor was third, ninth overall (12:49.99) and Maria Whitikar was fourth for KHS (28th overall, in 13:49.29). Jacqueline Estrella was 32nd overall (13:57.20), Carmen Velasco 36th (14 minutes) and Skyelar Howell was 75th (15:46).
