Volleyball teams are closing in on their district schedules, and Kilgore High School is tuning up with one last tournament this weekend in Brownsboro.
The Lady Bulldogs are competing in Volleyfest at Brownsboro, which started Thursday and continued today. Kilgore (6-10) was to play a team to be determined at noon today; Thursday’s games were pool play games, and now it’s into the double-elimination portion of the event.
Kilgore lost its first two on Thursday to Sabine, 26-24, 22-25, 22-25, and host-team Brownsboro, 11-25, 18-25, but then beat Frankston, 25-17, 25-15.
The Lady ‘Dogs, coached by Lacy Coldiron, will be home Tuesday against Pine Tree (starting at 4:30 p.m. with freshmen), and then visit Brook Hill in Bullard next Friday, varsity-only, at 4:30.
District 16-4A play begins Sept. 11 at home against Henderson – that’s Kilgore Middle School night.
On Thursday’s first day of play, Jada Abercrombie had 17 kills, 24 digs and five blocks; Lauren Bryant had nine aces and eight kills; Dayton McElyea had 10 kills; Ashton Vallery had 21 assists and 16 digs; Mackenzie Cavanaugh was huge on defense, Coldiron said, and had 16 digs.
“Shelby Page was also great in tough moments and helped pick up her team from whatever position she was in,” Coldiron said.
Leverett’s Chapel: LC’s Lady Lions took down much bigger Cumberland Academy, 25-18, 25-22, 25-16, on Tuesday night. LC was 10-11 overall headed into Friday night’s battle against another much-bigger program, Chapel Hill.
