The defending district and regional champion Kilgore High School Lady Bulldogs officially opened their season on Thursday in Longview, beating Nacogdoches and Lufkin Hudson as a part of the Spring Hill Invitational tournament.
Kilgore whipped Nac, 5-1, and then shut out Hudson, 4-0.
Senior Katy Raby scored three goals for coach Heidi Hagan-McPeak’s Lady Bulldogs (2-0) in the win over Nac. Jasmine Wheat and Maliyah Holland, just a freshman, scored the other two. Kylie Nichols and Holland each scored against Hudson, and Raby – a former Wendy’s High School Heisman semifinalist – scored twice. And Leslie Bennett had seven assists in the contests.
Sarah Lumas and Kaitlyn Miller each played goalkeeper for Kilgore on the tournament’s first day. The Lady Bulldogs were to face Jacksonville and Texas High on Friday, as the tournament continued. The girls visit Paris on Tuesday, a 5 p.m. junior varsity game start, with varsity to follow.
Coach Austin Walker’s Kilgore Bulldogs beat Nac, 3-1, here at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium on Tuesday night in a scrimmage. The Bulldogs will open the season by competing in a tournament in Longview Jan. 12-14, starting on Thursday, Jan. 12 at noon against John Tyler. Kilgore is also scheduled to meet Forney (on Jan. 13) and Lufkin (Jan. 14) in the tournament.
Both Kilgore teams would love to duplicate most of last season – both squads won their district and regional titles, and reached the state tournament in Georgetown before losing in the semifinals.
