A memorial service for Greta Dell Roberts, 83, of Kilgore, formerly of Tyler and Jacksonville, will be held at 10 a.m. at the Rader Funeral Home of Kilgore, Thursday, November 30, with Rev. David Hampton officiating. Mrs. Roberts died Friday, November 24, in Longview.
Greta Dell Dewees was born on March 17, 1934, in Campbell, Texas, to Homer and Jessie Felts Dewees. She was an honor graduate of Greenville High School, Tyler Commercial College, and Lon Morris College. Greta married John Venson Roberts in 1954 and enjoyed over 60 years of happy marriage until his death in 2015.
Over the years, Greta primarily served as support for Venson and his ministry work, which took them to Texas Baptist churches in Kirbyville, Dublin, Seymour, Jacksonville, and Chandler. She also worked hard to provide a stable and happy home for her husband and their two children; she was an excellent wife, mother, cook, and housekeeper. Along the way, she earned the family extra income by working as a secretary.
After Venson’s departure from full-time music ministry, the couple purchased the PFAFF Sewing Center in Tyler, operating it from 1978 until 1994. During this time as a co-owner of a “Mom & Pop” business, Greta worked faithfully alongside Venson in making sales and also took care of the books and inventory for the business.
In late 2009, Greta and Venson moved from Tyler to Kilgore to be near their daughter and son-in-law. They were active members of Kilgore’s First Baptist Church until Venson’s death in 2015, after which Greta moved into Arabella of Kilgore, an assisted living residence.
Greta liked to have fun and she had a wry sense of humor. She also loved her family fiercely. Having come from a large family – she had nine sets of aunts and uncles – her favorite times were when family (and sometimes friends) got together to eat, share funny stories, and play games like Spades, 42, Spinner, etc. Her remaining family is confident that Greta is fully enjoying the biggest and best gathering of all in Heaven.
Left to cherish her memory are her son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Juna Roberts of Tyler; her daughter and son-in-law, Robyn and Lowell Irving of Kilgore; her four granddaughters, Sarah Irving of Tomball, Chelsea Irving of Tyler, and Rebekah and Rachel Roberts of Tyler. She also had two great-grandchildren, Mark and Jenny Bearden of Tomball.
Greta was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three sisters, Joyce Winsett, Neva Loyce Dewees, and Laveta Jean Dewees.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff of Arabella of Kilgore Memory Care, Longview Regional Hospital, and Heartsway Hospice. Special thanks also to Donna Hearn, a devoted friend to Greta following Venson’s death.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Heartsway Hospice or to the Baptist Student Ministry at Kilgore College.
