Two vehicles were involved in a fatal crash on U.S. 259 and FM 918 south of Kilgore on Wednesday, according to a statement from DPS Sgt. Jean Dark.
The collision, which occurred six miles south of Kilgore at approximately 3:39 p.m. Wednesday, was the result of a vehicle running into the rear of a tractor-trailer.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of a 2018 Mack truck-tractor towing a tanker trailer was traveling north on US-259 and merged into the turn lane where it was waiting to turn onto FM-918. The driver of a 2015 Ford F-350, Gary Glenn Porter, 38, of Gilmer was traveling north on US-259 in the left lane. For an unknown reason, the Ford drifted into the turn lane and struck the back of the tanker trailer,” Sgt. Dark wrote in an email.
Rusk County Justice of the Peace Jerdy Wolverton pronounced Porter dead at the scene. Porter was taken to Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore.
The tractor-trailer driver, identified as Reginal Charles Sherrow, 46, of Henderson, did not sustain any injuries.
The crash is being investigated, according to Sgt. Dark’s email on Thursday.
