ETCS girls, boys both in T-CAL state tourney

There’s been extra excitement this week out at East Texas Christian School, where both the boys and girls basketball teams have qualified for the Texas Christian Athletic League’s state tournament at the All-Star Sportsplex in San Antonio.

The ETCS students gave the teams a send-off Wednesday morning, almost an impromptu pep rally, and in part, it must have worked: the Lady Chargers beat San Antonio Sunny Brook, 52-39, in their first game of the tournament, and were to play again Friday in the semifinal round against Cornerstone School, from Bryan.

The ETCS boys lost, unfortunately, to Corpus Christi Annapolis, 71-64, in their Thursday game in the tourney, and were eliminated from championship contention, but were also to play on Friday in an exhibition game.

The Lady Chargers are coached by Shelby Klein, the Chargers by former LeTourneau University basketball standout Zakarius Wells. Both are in their first season at ETCS, with impressive results.

The ETCS girls are 17-3 overall, after that win over Sunny Brook and prior to that, wins over Paris Christian and Sherman Grayson in the regional championship tournament.

Members of the Lady Chargers this season are Chloe Botkin, Sharon Brockway, Destini Dixon, Macaiah Dixon, Victoria Harris, Isabella Hill, Megan Langford, Jaden Parker, Jordan Parker, Sophia Simpson and Abby Truman. Managers are Rebecca Parker and Jenna Parker.

Carolyn Williams at ETCS said the school was allowing students in class on Friday to watch the semifinal game against Cornerstone, via internet streaming.

As for coach Wells’ Chargers, they too beat Sherman Grayson in regionals, but lost to Marshall Christian Academy in the regional championship.

They slipped up to Annapolis on Thursday, but still were in the state tourney for a second straight year.

Members of the Chargers this season are Andrew Brockway, Luke Brockway, Cason Clower, Larry Freeney, Brentton Jenkins, Triston Mayberry, Braden McCullin, Garrett Oehlert, James Sawyer, John Sawyer, Logan Sikorski, Matthew Vetter, Joshua Young and Micah Young. Managers are Deborah Brockway, Josh Vetter and Kathy Vetter.
