Their trip to the UIL Region II finals helped the Kilgore High School baseball program a spot in the top 10 in the final rankings.
The Diamond ‘Dogs, coached by Eugene Lafitte, were ranked seventh in the final Class 4A poll after having the program’s best season since 2004.
The Bulldogs went 27-6, at one point won 14 straight games, won the District 15-4A championship for a second straight year, defeated four playoff opponents without losing a game, and clinched the 300th career win for Lafitte before losing to Argyle. Argyle finished up the season 37-0, and won the 4A state title. Argyle, then, finished number one in 4A. Sweeney lost to Argyle in the state title game; they finished second. Godley was third; Jasper, fourth; Fredericksburg, fifth, Iowa Park, sixth, and Kilgore second. Salado (29-6-2), Robinson, and Pleasant Grove rounded out the top 10 in 4A.
