Concerts kick-off Friday

Fingers-crossed, the Harvest Moon Countrygrass Band will kick-off the 2018 Fridays After 5 concert series on the World’s Richest Acre this week.

The time, date and performers are definite – the bandmates are eager to bring their blend of bluegrass and “forgotten classic country” to downtown Kilgore – but April showers mean there’s a chance of a rainout at the outdoor stage Friday.

No worries, say Kilgore Main Street Manager Sonya Trout: Plan B is better than ever.

The Texan Theater is the new, go-to rain venue for the Main Street-sponsored concerts. With a new floor finished and other renovations underway, the City of Kilgore’s events coordinator says wet weather won’t dampen the evening, the activities will just move to the historic building if the skies are threatening.

That said, “We’re really hoping to be able to have everything go ahead weather-wise,” Trout noted, preferring the traditional Fridays After 5 ambience of the Acre and the derrick stars.

Harvest Moon Countrygrass Band promises “a little out-of-the-box” entertainment featuring Sheila Small, Fred Gebhardt, Brian Dearborn, Chad Nevils and Sammy Brasher. They’ll take the stage at 8 p.m. April 6, but the party begins earlier.

Beginning at 7 p.m. “We’ve actually invited a lot of vendors to come along to the event as well to create a more festive experience,” Trout said. “We’ve got people with handmade jewelry, rock paintings, photography, Charlie’s Sno-Balls... Downtown D’Lites will be there selling ice cream sandwiches.”

That’s all in addition to the array of shopping and dining available throughout the day and into the evening in ‘Historic Downtown Kilgore,’ she added.

“There will be lots for people to have a look at before the music starts.”

Fridays After 5 concerts are bring-your-own-chair events. For more information, log on to or call Kilgore City Hall at 903-984-5081.
