Class of '52 gathers for mini-reunion

Submitted Report

As if getting together in Kilgore last year for their 65th class reunion wasn’t enough, several members of the Kilgore High School Class of 1952 returned recently for a mini gathering at the local Jack Ryan’s restaurant for an afternoon of lunch, laughter and memories.

Each classmate was asked to relate a special memory from their school days. Meriam Elder Eakin’s memory of Van Cliburn moving to Kilgore at mid-term of first grade at Kilgore Heights was particularly entertaining.

“Even just a few hours together is such a treat” said Jerry Dalrymple Kelly. “We are a close class and many of our friendships run deep. We enjoyed every minute of our time together. This gathering was a spur of the moment event and it was great. Coming back to Kilgore is always such a wonderfully nostalgic time and we are thrilled to see the new improvements here.” At a class reunion in 2017, the group voted to donate the balance of their class account to the Kilgore Historical Preservation Foundation to help in preserving the history of Kilgore.

Classmates attending from Tyler were Meriam Elder Eakin and husband, Joe, and Wilma Jean Duke Owens. From Longview were Lottie Lipscomb Guttry and husband, John, and Martha Ruth Fielden Arden. Attending from Kilgore were Carolyn Watkins Kennedy and Wilma Agnew Jones. Also, Allen Earl Friberg of Lindale; Shirley Passmore Warnock, The Woodlands and Jerry Dalrymple Kelly from Akron, Ohio. Also attending the event were Nancy Cato Bullock (Class of ‘54), Jerry Kelly’s daughter, Teresa Pastor, and niece Suzanne Allen Tuttle of Ft. Worth. Suzanne is the daughter of former Kilgore News Herald sports editor, Ted Allen.
