Capitol Connect hosts state legislators Thursday

The 85th Texas Legislative Session and its ensuing special session are finished, and three state lawmakers are set to follow-up with their Kilgore constituency next week.

The first Capitol Connect luncheon sponsored by the Kilgore Chamber of Commerce is set for 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, in the Devall Ballroom at Kilgore College, the kick-off for an annual series putting Kilgore voters face-to-face with legislators.

Though the registration deadline has passed, some seats are still available for the event on a first-come, first-served basis through Tuesday.

Hosted by the chamber’s Government Affairs Committee, the event will feature District 1 Sen. Bryan Hughes alongside Rep. Jay Dean (District 7) and Rep. Travis Clardy (District 11).

According to committee chairman John Ben Blackburn, assistant general council for Martin Resource Management, “the establishment of this event allows the Chamber an opportunity to better serve as a voice for business through better communication with our government officials and to the business community.”

Each of the three legislators will have the chance to brief their Capitol Connect audience members on this year’s developments in Austin and to address key issues important to Kilgore businesses and residents. Attendees will also have the chance to submit questions for the trio which will be vetted and posed by a moderator, time permitting.

“The Capitol Connect event was created in order to bring our legislators, both state and federal level, to Kilgore to address key priorities of their constituents,” Kilgore Chamber President Cindy Morris said.

Those interested in attending Thursday’s luncheon have until Tuesday to reserve remaining spots, lunch included. Individual reservation is $22 per person and a reserved table for eight costs $225.

Reservations can be made online at through the ‘Calendar’ tab, with reservations payable by credit card, invoice or in advance at the door. Reservations can also be made at the chamber office, 813 N. Kilgore St., or by calling 903-984-5022.
