Bobby Beane is Meadowbrook’s 2017 match play champion.
Meadowbrook Golf and Event Center began a match play tournament back in September, and 37 people entered the event. Beane is the last man standing, having beaten John Patterson last week to capture the championship.
Beane had lost to Patterson, 6&5, in the winners bracket three weeks ago, forcing Beane to move into the one-loss bracket. Beane defeated Will Hale in the consolation bracket final, and then faced the task of having to beat Patterosn twice to get the championship, because Patterson was unbeaten.
Beane beat Patterson, 5&4, on Wednesday to set up a sudden-death final. Patterson took an early lead only to see Beane rally and tie things up late on the front nine.
On the ninth green, Beane made a 15-foot par putt to keep things tied, even after hitting the cart path and ending up 30 yards left at one point on the hole.
Patterson’s luck took a turn for the worse and he had a couple of shots lip out, and then Beane grabbed a two-shot lead headed into hole 17. The players tied on 17, and Beane had won, 2&1.
