HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

B'ball season already going at KHS

They’ve only played once, but in the midst of Kilgore High School’s football playoff run, the boys basketball Bulldogs have started their 2017-18 season.

Kilgore, once again coached by Jerry Timmons (now in his third season), lost a tight 52-50 game on the road at Pittsburg a week ago. The Bulldogs are 0-1, of course, and will play twice on Thursday in Union Grove as a part of the annual Chick-FIl-A Longview Officials Tournament.

The ‘Dogs will play Lindale at 9 a.m. and then Mount Pleasant at 5 p.m.

Kilgore’s home opener will be next Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 5:30 p.m. against Winona, starting with junior varsity, varsity to follow.

Some other upcoming dates to remember: The Bulldogs will host their own tournament, the Oil Belt Classic, next Thursday through Saturday; will host Tatum on Dec. 19; and will be a part of the Tyler Junior College tournament around the Christmas holidays.

District 15-4A play begins Jan. 12 at Chapel Hill – Kilgore’s basketball district also includes Bullard, Spring Hill, Gilmer, and Gladewater.

For Kilgore in the opener at Pittsburg, Jeremiah Hoskins got 14 points and seven rebounds. Seth Thomas had 12 points and six rebounds, and Hunter Bonnette had eight points and six rebounds. Samuel Kossel had eight points and two steals; Elijah Williams had six points and four rebounds; and Rowdy Rieke had two points and three rebounds.

Timmons’ first season was rough, just four wins. Last year, the ‘Dogs finished 13-17, just losing out on a playoff berth in the regular-season finale to a Gladewater team that was coached by Jeff Coleman.

That was ironic on two fronts: Timmons played his high school career for the Bears, and Coleman was coach for quite a while at KHS, leading the Bulldogs to a regional tournament back in 2013.

More irony: Coleman is back at Kilgore, now coaching the Lady Bulldogs after the departure of David Aguilar.

The Lady Bulldogs have already started their 2017-18 season, having just lost to Tatum, 38-33, in a tournament in Mount Pleasant-Chapel Hill.

Kilgore plays in a tournament that begins Thursday in Brownsboro, and then will host Atlanta on Monday, a 5 p.m. freshmen start, with JV and varsity to follow.
