Graveside services for Arthur Benton Custer Sr., 88, of Kilgore will be 2 p.m. Saturday, August 25, at the Kilgore City Cemetery. Arthur passed away Thursday, August 23, 2018.
Arthur was born May 15, 1930 in Louann, Ark., to Abel Bates Custer and Frances Mitche Custer. He graduated from Gladewater High School and, in his younger days, he enjoyed singing and playing guitar. Arthur proudly served his country in the US Air Force where he was a fighter and bomber mechanic during the Korean War. All the pilots wanted Arthur to work on their planes because of his attention to detail and extreme meticulousness.
Following his discharge from the military, he was set up on a date with the love of his life, Lillian Clark. On February 4, 1955 they were married. They were longtime members of Highland Park Baptist Church. Arthur did many things in the oil field that took him all over the world. However, he was a simple man and being a husband, father and “Granddaddy” was what made him most happy. He will be truly missed by those who loved him most.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James and Ray Custer; and sister, Margaret Ray.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Lillian Custer; children, Karen Ball (Richard) of Lone Star, Benton Custer (Donna) of Kilgore, and Kelly Custer of Kilgore; granddaughters, Brandi Heimer (Chris) of Kilgore and Amber Shaw (Jason) of Hughes Springs; great-grandchildren, Ava Heimer, Caroline Heimer, Blaine Shaw, and Madelyn Shaw; brother, George Custer of Atlanta, Ga.; brother-in-law, Steve Yocom of Kilgore; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members who loved him dearly.
