Kilgore High School students scored a bevy of top ratings at a University Interscholastic League competition Friday, February 1. The Region 4 UIL Vocal Solo & Ensemble event was held at Marshall High School. Choir students from across the region competed individually and in groups, performing a wide range of vocal musical works. more

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar today said state sales tax revenue totaled $2.8 billion in January, 6 percent more than in January 2018. “The growth in sales tax collections was primarily due to continued strong spending in oil- and gas-related sectors,” Hegar said. “Remittances from restaurants also grew, while those from retail trade were flat relative to a year ago.” more

For the 12th year in a row, Texas Mutual Insurance Company has donated $100,000 to Kilgore College to support its Risk Management Institute. KC President Dr. Brenda Kays thanked the insurance company for its annual donation which will help the RMI continue to offer workplace safety courses to employers, workers and the public. more

DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is studying aviation maintenance, and the instructors tell the students to expect random urine tests for drugs when they are employed. Drinking alcohol is fine, but using marijuana and other drugs are cause for losing your license and thus your career. Recently we were walking around Boston for a day and we smelled pot frequently. Recreational and medical marijuana are legal in Massachusetts. more

Last weekend wasn’t one to write home about for the Kilgore College basketball programs, who both suffered tough losses in the grind that is the Region XIV Conference. In the most recent case of live-by-the-sword, die-by-the-sword, the Rangers lost at Paris, 62-60, after beating Navarro by a tip-in just days before. It was made even more difficult to swallow by the fact that it was just the second conference win for Paris all season. more
