After more than three hours of discussion, the Texas House nearly unanimously passed a comprehensive bill to reform the way schools are funded and slow the growth of property tax bills. House Bill 3 would increase base funding for each student by $890, fund full-day pre-K for low-income 4-year-olds in most school districts, compress tax rates for all districts and reduce the amount of money wealthier districts pay the state in recapture payments to shore up poorer districts. Because Democrats spearheaded a change in the bill, it would also provide across-the-board raises for all full-time school employees who are not administrators. more
In recognition of National Work Zone Awareness Week, which runs April 8–12, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will be joined by law enforcement and safety advocates to ask motorists to stay alert and slow down when driving through work zones on Texas roadways. Kilgore High School softball wrapped up the first round of District 16-4A play in a lot less exciting fashion than it started. The Lady Bulldogs dropped a 9-7 decision at Henderson Tuesday night, the team’s second straight loss. Kilgore is 14-7 on the season and 2-3 in 16-4A play, and was to begin the second round of district Friday night at Spring Hill, in a game that was to conclude following the deadline for this print edition. more

Cold wind and rain kept the usual crowd away, but the Lone Star Lug Nuts still drew 122 vintage vehicles to Kilgore City Park March 30 for the 13th annual Early Bird Car Show fundraiser for the Percy R. Johnson Burn Camp. With a damp turnout this year, “I’m not sure about the exact amount we’re going to be able to give the kids,” co-organizer Marylin Morris said. “It’s going to be in the vicinity of $6,000.” more
