From time to time, it’s important to flex your muscles a bit – especially when you’re a high school basketball team on the cusp of the playoffs. Kilgore hosted Bullard in both girls and boys District 16-4A games on Tuesday and the Lady Panthers entered the gym wearing T-shirts honoring themselves for winning the district title. They left with a five-point loss. more

Last weekend wasn’t one to write home about for the Kilgore College basketball programs, who both suffered tough losses in the grind that is the Region XIV Conference. In the most recent case of live-by-the-sword, die-by-the-sword, the Rangers lost at Paris, 62-60, after beating Navarro by a tip-in just days before. It was made even more difficult to swallow by the fact that it was just the second conference win for Paris all season. more
HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL Kilgore splits with CH, as playoffs near Kilgore High School’s basketball teams split a doubleheader at Chapel Hill on Friday, and by the time this is printed, the KHS girls will be finished with their regular season. Kilgore’s Lady Bulldogs lost, 33-30. Kilgore beat CHHS the first time around, but couldn’t escape in Tyler. Jamaria Thomas led Kilgore with 14 points. Miah Thomas chipped in eight. more
The Kilgore High School basketball teams have been playing doubleheaders for a while now, through the District 16-4A schedule, and although that’s about to stop – the Lady Bulldogs are almost to the end of their regular season – both programs have reasons to be optimistic about the playoffs. Kilgore’s girls, at this writing, have just two games left: at Chapel Hill, which was to be played on Friday after the print deadline for this edition of the News Herald, and on Tuesday night at home against district-leading Bullard. more

BASEBALL / SOFTBALL KHS teams begin scrimmages Both Kilgore High School diamond programs are in preseason scrimmages, prepping for the upcoming season. Today, coach Cheyenne Kirkpatrick’s Lady Bulldogs – who have already played a handful of preseason games – visit Pine Tree in Longview for more, starting with KHS-PT at 10 a.m., and then on Tuesday, Kilgore scrimmages at Tatum at 4:30. The regular season begins Tuesday, Feb. 12 at Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill. more
With a little luck and a lot of determination, the rousing win Kilgore College’s Rangers got on Wednesday night will be a springboard for things to come in the 2018-19 basketball season.
