GOLF API fundraiser tourney May 10 at Tempest GC The East Texas chapter of the API will present its 50th annual scholarship fundraising golf tournament on Friday, May 10, at Tempest Golf Club (the former Southern Hills Golf Club) just off Highway 135, right outside Kilgore. more
The UIL State Track and Field Championships are May 10-11 in Austin, and once again, there will be Kilgore-area athletes vying for state medals: Kilgore’s Cameron Jackson and Calvin Woodside, and Leverett’s Chapel’s Yesenia Avalos. Jackson ran a blistering-fast 10.46-second time in the boys 100 meter dash last weekend at the UIL’s Class 4A Region II meet, at Texas A&M-Commerce. Jackson won that event, and also will go to state in the 200 meter dash. He was second in Commerce in the 200 (21.67 seconds) to Dallas Carter’s Michael Samihamba (21.48). more
For Kilgore, the 2019 baseball season began with a trip to Liberty-Eylau. Ironically, that’s exactly the opponent with whom the Diamond ‘Dogs begin this year’s postseason. The Bulldogs, winners of their district for three years running, will host the Leopards tonight at 6 p.m. in the first round of the UIL Class 4A playoffs. It was originally planned to begin Thursday, but the weather has forced a change, and it’s not certain right now if it’s one game or a best-of-three. See kilgorenewsherald.com today for updates. more
Kilgore High School’s softball season ended over the weekend, to a good North Lamar team. The Lady Bulldogs lost in two games to North Lamar, falling in the second game, 7-2 in the best-of-three-game series played in Quitman. Kilgore reached the playoffs for a second straight year after a decade of absences, and although the seniors this season were key to the team’s success, there are cornerstones coming back, including pitcher Kristen Wilson and young talents like Jaycie Villanueva and Bailey Hedges. more

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD Regionals this weekend for Kilgore Kilgore High School’s track and field athletes will have their shot at qualifying for next month’s state meet this weekend, at the University Interscholastic League’s Region II Track and Field Championships, at Texas A&M-Commerce. more
With a handful of games left in their regular season, the Kilgore College softball team welcomes Paris Junior College for a doubleheader today. Coach Leslie Messina and the Rangers have had to do some adjusting to their schedule, with quite a bit of rain over the last few weeks, but they’re currently 19-19 overall, and have a 9-11 record in the Region XIV Conference. more
For 49 years, the American Petroleum Institute has organized a first-class golf tournament that has awarded well over $2 million in scholarships to East Texas-area college students. This year, the API will make it an even 50. more
