By MITCH LUCAS Last year, to be honest, the Kilgore High School softball team was trying to break a lengthy playoff absence streak, and wanted to be a contender in its district. This year, the Lady Bulldogs fully intend to compete for a district championship. They took the first step on Tuesday, here at Stream-Flo Field. Kilgore run-ruled visiting Spring Hill, 10-0, in the District 16-4A opener for both teams. The Lady ‘Dogs, coached by former KHS standout Cheyenne Kirkpatrick, are 13-4, have won five of their last six games, and at press time, they were to host Bullard on Friday night. Kilgore hits the road Tuesday to Chapel Hill, and then hosts Gilmer next Friday. Spring Hill’s very first batter had what wound up being scored as a hit. And after that, Kilgore pitcher Kristen Wilson didn’t allow another base-runner, one batter short of a perfect game. And she got plenty of support at the plate. Bailey Downing singled to lead off Kilgore’s half of the first, and then stole second base. Genna Cavanaugh hit an RBI single to bring home Downing, and then Cavanaugh stole second, too. She scored on an RBI single by Wilson. In the bottom of the third, Kilgore plated three more, and in the fifth, two more. Downing and Cavanaugh were on base in the fifth and both scored on an RBI double by Bailey Hedges. Downing finished with the early single and two stolen bases (Kilgore had nine stolen bases in all). Cavanaugh went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Hedges finished 3-for-4 with the 2-RBI double and she added another RBI, as well. Miah Thomas went 3-for-3 with three singles, 2 RBI, and three total stolen bases – one of them was home plate. Wilson went 2-for-3 with a single, a double and 2 RBI; Mackenzie Cavanaugh went 1-for-3 with a single; Hailee Jo Lewis reached on an error; Jada Dennis had a stolen base; Tra’Kaila Graves was hit by a pitch and had a stolen base; and in all, Kilgore had 12 hits. more
