After what seemed to be an endless series of lightning delays, Kilgore led Midlothian Hertiage 2-0 with about 18 minutes left to play in the University Interscholastic League’s Class 4A Region II championship – 18 minutes and 34 seconds from a fourth trip to the state tournament since 2011. more
It’s been said that when you’re in coaching, every win is special, but last week, Sabine High School’s Michael Mayfield had a milestone victory that will be one to remember. Mayfield coached the Sabine Cardinals to a 10-0 shutout of rival Gladewater Friday night at Liberty City, earning his 100th career win. more
Five Kilgore High School tennis players will be on hand for competition today, in the UIL Region II tournament at Longview High School. Kilgore softball broke a 10-year playoff drought last year, and apparently, the girls have decided to simply not allow another, not even for a season. The Lady Bulldogs pounded overmatched Chapel Hill, 12-0, on Friday night, here at Stream-Flo Field. That leaves KHS with a 4-4 record in District 16-4A, with fourth place (the final playoff spot in the district) all but wrapped up – but with an outside shot at third, depending upon this upcoming final week of the regular season. more

Kilgore High School’s track and field athletes that qualified for the area meet are going to have to cool their jets for an extra day. The area meet was added by the University Interscholastic League (UIL) a couple of years ago; it’s an extra round, basically, between the district meets at the Texas high school level and the regional meets. It’s one more hurdle, no pun intended, for potential state-qualifiers to leap in order to get to the state meet in Austin next month. more
There are a handful of games left in the regular season, but Kilgore High School baseball has placed themselves in a great position, squarely atop the District 16-4A standings – a place they’re now accustomed to assuming the last three years. Kilgore beat previously-eighth-ranked Bullard, 9-2, on Friday night in Bullard to complete a sweep of the Panthers. Coach Eugene Lafitte’s Diamond ‘Dogs are now 17-5 overall, and are 3-1 against both Bullard and Spring Hill in the last 2 ½ weeks. The schedule sent the Bulldogs to Gilmer on Tuesday for a game that was to be played after the print deadline for this issue of the News Herald. more
HOUSTON – Off the drag strip, Reigning Mello Yello Champion Steve Torrence and three-time former champion Antron Brown are best friends. Together, they host a bible study group at races like Sunday’s 32nd annual Mopar Express Lane NHRA Spring Nationals, they compete as Chocolate-and-Crème Racing teammates in off-road events like the Mint 400 and, without a doubt, they are each other’s biggest fan. However, when they line up against one another, as they did in Sunday’s semifinals at Houston Raceway Park, all bets are off. more
