Opening day of the 2019 season for the Kilgore College softball team had a little good, a little bad, and was just the first step of a season that lasts through April, one that coach Leslie Messina hopes ends with a postseason appearance. KC split with Midland College here at the Ballpark at KC Commons, with KC taking the first game – technically winning the season opener – before falling in the second. more
Kilgore High School’s track and field athletes that qualified for the area meet are going to have to cool their jets for an extra day. The area meet was added by the University Interscholastic League (UIL) a couple of years ago; it’s an extra round, basically, between the district meets at the Texas high school level and the regional meets. It’s one more hurdle, no pun intended, for potential state-qualifiers to leap in order to get to the state meet in Austin next month. more

There are a handful of games left in the regular season, but Kilgore High School baseball has placed themselves in a great position, squarely atop the District 16-4A standings – a place they’re now accustomed to assuming the last three years. Kilgore beat previously-eighth-ranked Bullard, 9-2, on Friday night in Bullard to complete a sweep of the Panthers. Coach Eugene Lafitte’s Diamond ‘Dogs are now 17-5 overall, and are 3-1 against both Bullard and Spring Hill in the last 2 ½ weeks. The schedule sent the Bulldogs to Gilmer on Tuesday for a game that was to be played after the print deadline for this issue of the News Herald. more
High school athletes across the United States – and several right here in the East Texas area – took part in the annual ritual that is National Signing Day on Wednesday. The day – where senior athletes around the country make their college destinations official by signing letters of intent – has evolved over time and now has hours of coverage on ESPN and its family of networks, and entire websites – and among them – make their living off of NSD coverage. more
After what seemed to be an endless series of lightning delays, Kilgore led Midlothian Hertiage 2-0 with about 18 minutes left to play in the University Interscholastic League’s Class 4A Region II championship – 18 minutes and 34 seconds from a fourth trip to the state tournament since 2011. more

From time to time, it’s important to flex your muscles a bit – especially when you’re a high school basketball team on the cusp of the playoffs. Kilgore hosted Bullard in both girls and boys District 16-4A games on Tuesday and the Lady Panthers entered the gym wearing T-shirts honoring themselves for winning the district title. They left with a five-point loss. more
