A Word Please

by June Casagrande
Every time I see a promo for the movie “The Expendables,” I do a double-take. The “-ables” ending looks wrong to me. So I picture the name spelled “Expendibles,” which, of course, looks even worse. That’s because the producers are spelling it correctly.

Spelling has rules. Let's

Spelling has rules. Let's make a rule, -able means that it can be done. Then get rid of -ible, which is just a nuisance. If we could make a rule about -ant/ent it would be good, too. We have independent and dependant - it's silly.

Ridiculous English spelling

Ridiculous English spelling Just shows how ridiculous English spelling is! Why do we hav to waste time figuring out this kind of spelling complication when we ar riting, thus interrupting our thought? As lerners we had this problem with lots of words, especially those with a long e sound, which has a dozen different spellings!! We complain about poor spelling and about poor literacy levels (which our absurd spelling abets) but we do little about it. How crazy ar we?
