Houston businessman offers new beginning for tattered mansion

By J. LOUISE LARSON news1@kilgorenewsherald.com
Grand, complicated, majestic, the original Potter mansion is being restored to its original splendor under the loving eye of John Schreiber. Formerly neglected, the massive 1930-built brick home is looking sharp these days, its grounds and 12,000 square feet sandwiched into Kilgore’s hotel district on the outskirts of U.S. 259.

I saw the inside of the house

I saw the inside of the house when it belonged to Harry Crow and had been cut up into apartments and also ate at La Hacienda. Even in disrepair it was still beautiful. Hope some of the blue mirrors and the gilt cornices were left and could be salvaged. Also miss driving by and seeing the ducks in the pond out front. Thanks to Mr. Schreiber for keeping such a beautiful architectural landmark standing for other to enjoy.

As a child, I visited that

As a child, I visited that house, which was the home of the grandmother of my friend, Betsy Potter. It was the world's best place for hide-and-seek! There was something about hiding things in the chandelier over the stairs - - a corner that opened - - but that may have been replaced long ago. It was such a showplace - thank you for caring!
