City’s garage sales laws to be enforced

The City of Kilgore is about to get tough on residents trying to run year-round garage sales as a business. An ordinance requiring permits for garage sales was passed by the Kilgore city council in 2007, but enforcement has lagged. It will lag no more, according to Justin Windham, code enforcement officer for the city.

Here we go again with a typical government reaction to a problem of possibly missing some tax revenue. I know it will never happen, but it would be very interesting to see a cost versus revenue gained analysis 2 years from now. My guess is that in addition to the inconvenience of citizens holding legitimate garage sales, the City (that is the tax payers) will probably have spent at least $20.00 for every dollar of increased revenue. It should be obvious to anyone with an IQ over 50, who are operating year round garage sales. Make an effort to go after them instead of punishing the rest of the citizens of this City. I would like to see a cost of just the overtime pay verses to increased revenue gained from the non legitimate garage sales without factoring in the fines levied to people who’s garage sale would be legitimate except that they failed to obtain the proper papers.
