How time flies
CHITCHAT CORNER LINDA K. BALLARD
YES, IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN. It’s time to spring forward into a new season along with daylight savings time (we do hope you remember to turn your clocks forward) and it’s time we hear Joe Don Saxon as he celebrates the 41st anniversary of the auction house with his longstanding greeting of “Welcome to Hawkins Westside Auction”.
ONCE AGAIN, he has packed the auction house with everything imaginable from the finest of antiques to the finest of junk. He is bringing in the cake (and maybe apple dumplings if you are lucky) and offering door prizes on this particular Saturday. While you are there don’t forget to ask about his million dollars give-a-way.
IF YOU THINK it is too far to travel to the longest running auction in the state of Texas you might want to meet up with the Paces who have been making that trip for twenty years and with Mr. and Mrs. Kyle who have been attending for thirty-six years or better yet, catch a ride with Kilgoreite Darlene Bess, owner of The Junction Antique shop. She can be reached at 903-830-0013.
IT’S JUST NOT QUITE SATURDAY NIGHT without a good auction. It’s starts at 6:30 p.m. and you can check it out Joe don’s antics (I mean antiques) on his website at saxonauctions. com. Have fun!
WEATHER LIKE THIS reminds me of a quote by Henry David Thoreau that was “The Indian stands free and unconstrained in Nature, is her inhabitant and not her guest, and wears her easily and gracefully…” If the winter- time blahs have you with itchy feet for nature, travel now to Mrs. Lee’s Daffodil Garden located at 21600 CR 3103, Gladewater, TX. The daffodils within this 918-acre farm are now in full bloom. The gardens are only open until the end of March so grab a picnic basket, your camera and head fast. The gardens are open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
IT HAPPENED THIS WEEK for the Wilbur Yates women. Because of a snowstorm around Valentine’s Day, the luncheon that Wilbur has every year for his
widow and single women clientele for Edward Jones Investments was held this week at Meadowbrook Country Club. The tables were elaborately adorned with feminine colors to bring in the excitement of spring with the Valentine theme
woven in. Approximately 40 women, including his wife Kay and staff were recipients of a rose provided by Wilbur.
KAREN SALYER, whose birthday was the same day celebrated by eating a large piece of chocolate pie. A blackberry cobbler (Wilbur’s favorite) was also provided as dessert for the luncheon, but according to Pudge Griffin, she couldn’t eat the cobbler because it “didn’t have anything white on it.” She shared with the group that as a child when served cobbler there was always whipped cream, or ice cream served with cobblers and to date the dessert is not complete without it.
A GUEST SPEAKER, Barry Herring with Genworth Financial remarked, “I am jealous that Wilbur can get so many single ladies in one room at one time. The ladies thoroughly enjoyed the luncheon and the attention Wilbur always provides to them.
SPEAKING OF SPECIAL ATTENTION – Country Place Village held an open house this week showcasing a new expanded Memory Care Facility. Guided tours and hors d’oeuvres were provided and the Kilgore Chamber Ambassadors were there to support the facility. Charlie Whiteside, the new chairman of the board for Kilgore Chamber of Commerce and Archie Whitfield met up with me to let me know that I had gotten their names mixed recently. “Getting us confused, is a common thing,” said Archie. “If Charlie gets in too deep, it’s alright with me if you do it again.” (Well, we will definitely remember that. Stay straight, Charlie.)
May His Love and Laughter Fill Your Hearts and Your Homes Throughout the Week. In the meantime, we may be reached at 903-984-2593 or at chitchatlinda@ aol.com.
