Ballots set for school, city voting

Kilgore almost made it through the election season without an election. Local businessman Ronnie Spradlin, a member of the city council, drew a challenger Monday afternoon in his bid to fill the unexpired term of Mayor Joe T. Parker. Lester Murray, former reporter for the News Herald, Monday afternoon filed the paperwork necessary to challenge Spradlin.

Kilgore's mayor may be the "head" of the city, but city council is the "neck," and the neck moves the head. Kilgore's Mayor is the "voice of the city" and a rarely-needed fill-in voter and tie-breaker decision maker. Who would best fill this role? A proven decision maker like Spradlin? No. No. No. Spradlin has been a remarkable council member. He best serves Kilgore with a more-frequent decision-making role in civic affairs. Let Murray have the mayor's chair and title. Leave Spradlin to vote what is right for Kilgore residents and continue in his more-important role as a councilman.
